BRICs/BRICS meetings of Foreign Ministers have been regularly held alongside the UNGA. The first informal meeting took place in 2006. The first formal meeting of Foreign Ministers was held in 2008, in Yekaterinburg. On the occasion, the Ministers issued a Joint Communiqué highlighting the support of China and Russia to the aspirations of Brazil and India to play a more significant role in the United Nations, and reaffirming the need for a broad reform of that organization.
Coordination between BRICS members on regional crises takes place in the context of both the annual meetings alongside the UNGA and the preparation of the leaders´ declarations. During the first cycle of Summits, the number of topics with common BRICS positions has gradually increased.
The latest meeting of Foreign Ministers at the margins of the UNGA was held in September 2015. A communiqué was issued on the occasion.
